bob corker, a member of the senate foreign relations committee was questioned yesterday. senator, good morning to you. >> good morning, bill. bill: what you think? >> we need to have another hearing. secretary clinton said she takes responsibly for what happens and she needs to come to our committee and talk about the flavored things that have happened. causing the security at benghazi to be so lax. bill: they were saying even 99% is not good enough. they talked about needing more money. >> yes, that's the most -- the main part of this. in hearing this the other day in a closed session, everyone is talking about the need for more money. the fact is that they had 16 security officers that were being provided for free as it relates to the state department. they sent home three weeks prior to this happening. this is not about money. unfortunately here in washington, the first answer always is money. that's not the issue here. i think the state department has a culture there that doesn't breed any kind of creative thinking. thinking outside the box, making sure that things ar

bob costas is a brilliant sportscaster and jason whitlock is right, if there is no gun here, nobody is dead. i don't know what the issue is to take issue with. we just had a presidential campaign, martha and not one time did gun control and gun issues come up. i know they probably don't want to take on these lobbies and they're very powerful and very strong but we just had a kid go into a theater in aurora, colorado, with semiautomatic weapons and start blowing everybody up. if you don't have them it doesn't happen. nobody who possessed a gun in colorado was there to take him down at the time. these are difficult, difficult issues that need to be addressed and as far as this football issue right here, if he doesn't have a gun they're both alive. i don't have a problem with what he said. martha: jim, thank you. and i would ask everybody at home, send me a tweet on this i know everybody has a lot of thoughts on it. some people basically saying there is a will, unfortunately to kill, it finds a way eventually and it is a tragedy no matter how you look at it that these two young people are

bob corker the u.s. senator said this is just for show, this is purely optics, the president is not sincere. what do you think? >> well this is not for show, this is a last-ditch effort by the president to bring the congressional leaders together to try and get at least a small package, a small deal together before the new year to avoid some of the tax parts of the fiscal cliff, and to deal with some of the unemployment issues. so, the president is very determined to try and do it, as you know, the house of representatives packed up its bags and went home. they are not even coming back until sunday night even though the clock is ticking. gregg: you call it a small deal. don't americans deserve something more than a small deal from what is arguably small politician stph-s. politicians? >> well when i say a small deal i don't mean an unimportant deal especially in fact as you've been reporting on january 1st people's taxes will start to go up, a big tax hike for middle class americans and others. the bill

i want to show you a poll that was on "hot air" this morning, then we'll get to bob. it says which approach do you prefer. to reduce the deficit. this poll is 800 people who voted for president obama. they are split in the middle. 41% say mostly tax increases with some spending cuts. but the same number want mostly spending cuts with some tax increases. 5% of these obama voter say they want tax increases only. but 10% of the people who voted for obama in this policy they want spending cuts only. bob, where are we here? >> it looks a little confusing except when you look at history of polling. norquist is a blowhard and a bully. it's not surprising people want more spending cuts and less taxes. that's not a surprise. martha: that's not what they are getting in the white house package. >> if the republicans would give up on 2% tax rates nobody would have to worry about anything. >> bob, obama-care already taxes the middle class. the majority of the country do not want to be taxed. what they don't know already is everybody is getting a tax increase because of obama-care.

this report is out and the first reaction we are getting, you're going to hear from senator bob corker, republican from tennessee, his big point is insisting that hillary clinton still testify about what happened there. and then senator john kerry, who believes based on the report that you read, that the department of state has already taken a number of steps forward in a positive way. first corker, then kerry, reaction now. >> there is no question that there were people within the state department that were remiss and did not execute in an appropriate way. there are also some cultural issues, and, i mean, there were no doubt numbers of problems. and i would just say to that end, i know that secretary clinton was unable to be able to testify tomorrow in an open setting. i do think it's imperative for all concerned that she testify in an open session prior to any changing of the regime. >> i think the department has taken a huge step forward to address the lessons learned from benghazi, which are important to everybody. you know, there are 70,000 employees over there. there are 275 diff
